Potatoes are a low fat and relatively low calorie food. Many people think of them as a high calorie food. That’s because we often eat them in the form of French fries (or chips as we call them) or potato chips (or crisps as we call them in Ireland), which are both high calorie foods.
For these low fat air fryer potatoes, we just add a tablespoon of oil. This gives them a delicious crispy taste. I honestly enjoy them as much as French fries, but they are MUCH lower in fat and calories.
Ingredients:
- Potatoes
- Oil
- Smoked paprika
- Salt
How to Make this Recipe:
The first step is to peel the potatoes, or to wash the potatoes if you want to leave the skins on. I have gone for a sitting on the fence approach, peeling the potatoes to remove the bruises and more noticeable imperfections on the skins but leaving some of the skins on the potatoes. You can choose whether to peel or not to peel.
The next step is to cut the potatoes into slices.
You then place the potatoes in a bowl and pour over a tablespoon of oil, then sprinkle over the smoked paprika and some salt. Toss the potatoes to coat them evenly with the oil and the smoked paprika.
Next you please them on the air fryer tray. I find around 3 layers high works fine if you give them a shake once or twice during the cooking process. Cook the potatoes at 200 degrees Celsius (390 degrees Fahrenheit) for around 20 minutes. As I mentioned, I like to stop the air fryer and give the potatoes a shake during the cooking process.
What Potatoes to Use:
Certain breeds or potatoes such as Russets are often recommended to make fries. They are more dense and are supposed to result in a crispier less soggy end result.
I’ll be honest though, I often don’t know what type of potatoes I have. They all tend to work out just fine.
Should I Soak the Potatoes Before Air Frying?
Many recipes will recommend to slice the potatoes and leave them to soak for a while before air frying. This is supposed to remove some of the starch and make the potatoes taste more crispy. I think this helps to make the potatoes a little crispier and my advice is to go for it if you have the time. I think that the air frier potatoes also taste great without soaking so I wouldn’t get hung up on this step.
Variations:
There are lots of options for adding different herbs and seasonings to the potatoes. You can add some garlic powder and dried mixed herbs. I also really enjoy them with a sprinkle of Cajun spice mix.
Or you can go keep it basic and just go with a little oil and a sprinkle of salt.

What to Serve with the Low Fat Air Fryer Potatoes:
First or all, you don’t need to serve these with anything if you don’t want to. You can enjoy them all on their own. Maybe with a little ketchup or mayonnaise.
They also work great as side dish. Personally I love to serve some air fryer potatoes along with rice when having a dahl or a curry.
