What better than a round of vitamin C packed shots, that are sweet and a little bitter with the hot tingle of ginger at the back of the throat.

These shots are a treat at any time. They also contain lots of vitamin C and other ingredients associated with health promotion. A round of these shots will also go down well if you have guests over.

Ginger – is a root known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiemetic (anti-nausea) properties. It has a pleasantly spicy kick to it, especially when added to drinks.

Turmeric – Turmeric is also a root that is related to ginger, and has been used in traditional medicine in countries such as India and China for centuries. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and it has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Black pepper – black pepper may help to increase your body’s ability to absorb Turmeric’s beneficial compounds.

Orange – Adds sweetness and vitamin C.

Lemon – More vitamin C and also brings a little bitterness to the table.

How to Make these Shots

To make these shots, first peel the ginger, turmeric, lemon and orange. For the first three, I usually use a peeler and then peel the oranges by hand.

Add all of the ingredients to a blender. Add a handful of ice cubes. These help to create a smooth consistency and also make the shots refreshingly cool. Blend until the mixture is smooth.

If you have a powerful blender such as a Vitamix or a Blendtec, after the ingredients are blended, you can pour the shots directly into glasses and enjoy. If you take your orange juice “with bits”, the consistency after using a powerful blender should be just fine for you.

If you are using a less powerful blender, the liquid may require straining through a sieve in order to end up with a smoother juice. To do this simply hold a sieve over a jar or wide glass and slowly pour the mixture into the sieve and you should end up with a smoother juice.

The other option is to use a juicer and juice all of the ingredients through the juicer. You may not end up with as much juice at the end using this method, so may need to increase the volumes of each ingredient.
