Mushroom teas and coffees are all the rage right now. These are not made from the common mushrooms you get in the supermarket, but from other varieties of mushrooms such as Reishi, Lion’s mane, Cordyceps, Chaga and Turkey Tail. Such types of mushrooms are also known as functional mushrooms.

Now, while the concept of a beverage based on mushrooms might not sound too appealing to a lot of people, I have tried several different types and some can taste a little bitter and earthy but they are generally quite pleasant. I like this mushroom coffee blend from the shroom shop, which combines 5 of the main functional mushroom varieties.

If the flavour doesn’t sound like your cup of t…..(sorry), there are many varieties that have added ingredients to improve the flavour such as cocoa powder and various sweeteners.

The mushroom beverage I currently drink on most days is Rainbow Dust from Space Goods. It’s a blend of function mushrooms along with some cocoa, stevia sweetener and has some other adaptogenic herbs such as Maca root and Ashwagandha. I take it along with boiling water and sometimes with some added oat milk. I like the flavour, and definitely notice an increased ability to focus and concentrate after drinking it.

Many mushroom beverages do generally contain some added caffeine, however the amount is usually a lot lower than a regular cup of Starbucks.
